The Alzheimer's Association Learning Institute offers a variety of ongoing educational programs for individuals with the disease, their families and care partners. All Learning Institute’s educational programs are evaluated against national benchmarks.
The Learning Institute’s education programs are held at different locations throughout the Alzheimer’s Association’s nine-county region. The programs are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Understanding Alzheimer’s disease
The two-hour information seminar is designed for families, friends and care partners of individuals newly diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The seminar provides information on Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis and treatments, explores techniques to communicate with individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, identifies possible interventions for changes in behaviors and identifies resources useful to the caregivers. The seminar is regularly scheduled throughout the community. No fee.
Caregiver Education Seminars
The Learning Institute offers more than 50 seminars for family caregivers on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from “Dementia vs. Normal Aging” to “Managing Challenging Behaviors.” The one-hour seminars provide an overview of topics pertinent to caregivers and families and offer opportunities for
questions and answers. Presentation outlines and references are provided to participants. No Fee.
Family Education Courses
This is a series of three two-hour courses designed to provide families with in-depth, practical skills in dementia care. The courses focus on issues of communication, behavior and meaningful activities. Course materials are provided along with prepared participant outline. Fee.
Caring for an Aging Loved One (CALO)
Educational programs and easy-to-use information to meet the special needs of older adults and the family members who care for them. No fee.
Web-based Courses
The Learning Institute’s online courses are created for persons with dementia and their caregivers. These easy to read courses are thought provoking, insightful, and easily applicable to the caregiving experience. Eleven online courses, divided into eighteen sections, offer the latest research information with the convenience and flexibility of web-based learning.
